Pre-IB
The Pre-IB is a one-year preparatory course for Danish and non-Danish students prior to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP)
Subjects
Although Pre-IB is formally the first year of the Danish stx programme (1.g), it is taught in English with a strong IB focus.
Students explore IB concepts and develop the skills needed for the academically demanding IB Diploma Programme. Most Pre-IB students continue to the IB Diploma Programme afterwards.
A year in Pre-IB gives you a unique opportunity to experience the international outlook and atmosphere of the IB programme while attending a Danish upper-secondary school.
Application
To apply for the Pre-IB Programme, you will need to fill in two online application forms. The deadline for applications will be 1st March 2027 at 12.00.
Students applying must upload two application forms: Firstly, students should fill in the online Pre-IB application form (see link above) and attach all the requested documents. Before filling in the application form, please read the Pre-IB programme and subject information on the Pre-IB page of the website in order to be able to make qualified choices in the languages and sciences.
Secondly, students should apply through Optagelse.dk between 15 January 2027 and 1 March 2027. As this online application system is currently in Danish only, Danish IB schools have put together an English guide.
Please note that the admissions process gives priority to applicants who have indicated in Optagelse.dk that Pre-IB at Nørre Gymnasium is their first choice/priority school. In accordance with guidelines from the Ministry of Children and Education, applicants will be advised of admissions decisions no later than May 2027.
Rosa, former IB student
“I wanted to study in an environment where everyone wants to learn. The students who come here genuinely care about their academics and want a challenge. The international environment prepares those of us who want to study outside of Denmark. The level is getting increasingly harder but the teachers do a good job at making sure no one falls too far behind. I definitely recommend taking Pre-IB, it makes the changeover much easier.”
Frequently asked questions
You can apply for admission to Pre-IB after completing 9 or 10 years of schooling. Pre-IB is equivalent to the first year of the Danish stx programme, IB MYP 5 and the final year of the British GCSE/IGCSE programme.
Danish-speaking students who decide not to continue to the IB Diploma Programme can transfer to the second year of the Danish stx (2.g), though a place at Nørre Gymnasium cannot be guaranteed.
